- I recently bought a computer with no manual. I'm trying to figure
- out how it works: an abacus.
-
- Anyone out there got any references for how to use an abacus? Are
- there different forms? Different means of using them? Mine is 27 rows of
- buttons, with 5 buttons in each row, and a 6th separated from the rest
- with a bar. Total of 27X6 buttons, in other words. [27-bit computing?]
-
- Presumably the 6th button is some kind of mode-of-the-5 buttons
- button. I'm guessing that if it's up or down it means there's some kind
- of multiplier in effect?
-
- Does anyone know what kinds of math an abacus most lends itself
- to? Presumably addition/multiplication and so forth, but what else?
- [factorization of 260-digit primes? ;)]
-
- Has anyone ported a reasonable UNIX clone to it? ;)
- mjr.
-
- [PS - anyone want to make bets as to how long it'll be until the digital
- calculator kills the abacus off? I bought this one simply because it's a
- *lovely* work of art - nicely lacquered mahogany with bamboo rails and
- boxwood buttons that are delightfully crisply-edged. For $19.99, it was
- cheaper than my 486, too]
