  29. Q: Why we don't use SLIP for our Gopher-server. 
  30. A: Two reasons:
  31.    o The weaker one: There are only very few universities in germany  
  32. you can
  33.    access via SLIP - by now - and a free SLIP access for EVERYONE is  
  34. not
  35.    in sight.

  37.    o More important for us: We wanted to write an independent system  
  38. for
  39.    presentation of data found on a server using an existing protocol  
  40. to
  41.    give our clients a good start. You can use our clients to access  
  42. ordinary
  43.    Gopher-servers via TCP/IP or SLIP and you can use them to form a  
  44. serial
  45.    connection to our server-software running with special gateways on  
  46. computers
  47.    that work as BBS or fido-box or even as a Internet-gateway - if  
  48. you don't
  49.    have SLIP. With gateways written for these and other systems you  
  50. can melt
  51.    the different BBS to one virtual server.

  53.    I hope this makes our idea clearer: We want to leave the  
  54. high-performance
  55.    infrastructure you have on the Internet to give people without  
  56. access to
  57.    the Internet the possibility to start an own server an a PC,  
  58. Amiga, Atari ST
  59.    or something even worse, using the Gopher-protocol. A system that  
  60. is better
  61.    than videotext and even cheaper. And to hit the political aspect:  
  62. If you give
  63.    access to the Internet to everyone, it will break down. But  
  64. everyone should 
  65.    have access to powerful information-systems - in reading and  
  66. writing.

  70. Q: Why did you do this? In the Unix world, a user with software  
  71. supporting 
  72.    VT100 emulation from their home can dial into any gopher server  
  73. through 
  74.    their account on that machine and run gopher (as opposed to  
  75. xgopher). 
  76. A: We want to support also people who are not familiar with  
  77. computers:
  78.    You can't make them work with VT100 clients and we dont't want  
  79. them to learn
  80.    how to download and to convert data to get it finally displayed on  
  81. their
  82.    computer. To hit the political aspect: Everyone should have access

  84.    powerful information-systems - wirehead or not.
