  12. Version 2.1 of IVS is now available from avahi.inria.fr in the file
  13. /pub/videoconference/ivs.tar.Z.

  15. The INRIA Videoconferencing System (IVS) is a tool to support
  16. audio and video conferences over the Internet. It includes a
  17. software codec, a dynamic admission control mechanism integrated
  18. in the codec, and a protocol to manage the participants in a
  19. videoconference (e.g. add a new participant to a conference
  20. already in progress).

  22. This version includes a lot of changes & improvements. Here are the main
  23. changes:
  24.  
  25.     * All Motif calls have been removed. Now, the Athena toolkit is used. 
  26.       A scrollbar is used to display the list of participants. (The
  27.           previous display was not very fast...) This list of participants
  28.           begins first with your local station, the active stations and then,
  29.           the passive stations.
  30.  
  31.     * A rate control option for video data is added. Two possibility of
  32.       control are available:
  33.  
  34.         - Privilege Quality - In this mode, the frame rate is reduced in
  35.                               order not to overrun the maximum rate
  36.                   selected. Useful for still images...
  37.  
  38.         - Privilege frame rate - In this mode, no delay is added. The
  39.                   control rate is done using the quantizer and
  40.                                   the movement detection's threshold. These
  41.                                   parameters are dynamically
  42.                   chosen to fit in
  43.                                   the bandwidth selected.

  46.     * IVSD (IVS daemon) added. Running it in background allows
  47.           you to be called by anyone on the Internet. A small icon will
  48.           appear and a message will pop up when an ivs talk is requested. If
  49.           you click on the "Accept" option, an ivs command will be run
  50.           automatically towards your party. For example, if you want to call
  51.           asterix@obelix.fr, just run ivs obelix.fr
  52.           Then, if you click on the "Call up" button, the ivs request is
  53.           sent to the obelix.fr host. If you click on the icon, you will be
  54.           able to initiate an IVS session in unicast or multicast mode.

  56.     * A new button allows to freeze the image.
  57.  
  58.     * Now, local display selection, audio encoding mode and VideoPix port 
  59.       input may be changed during encoding.
  60.  
  61.     * The audio driver is now automatically closed when there is no audio
  62.       data encoding/decoding.

  64.         * The video bandwidth and the frame rate are now displayed at the
  65.           encoder side.

  67.     * Speed improvements

  69.     * Port numbers are now differents in unicast mode. In this way an
  70.          unicast call may be done during a multicast conference.

  72.     * Video and audio decoding options are now implicit except for
  73.       your local station. To disable this mode, use the -a|-v options
  74.        (see manual).
