In order to teach some 3d graphics principles we would like to have students
modify a very simple CAD package written using PHIGS(+).  It only needs to be
very basic, perhaps only supporting lines in 3d, allowing them to be edited
and attached to a structure.  Point entry via pick or snap using a mouse,
save and restore structure archive, and a small range of viewpoints.

Before I go ahead and write this, I wondered if anyone knows of an existing
public domain, freeware or GNU package that would be suitable?  It doesn't
matter if its a lot more complex than we need provided it is well written
(with enough comments to understand it).

Alternatively perhaps someone knows of a book with an example of this kind?
