  13. I'm considering buying one of the low cost Ariel DTK's
  14. for either the Motorola 56001 (DTK-56) or the TI 'C30
  15. (DTK-C30 ?).

  17. IF YOU OWN OR FREQUENTLY USE one of these kits, I'd 
  18. greatly appreciate your opinions.  My questions are:

  20. 1. Would you buy it again now that you know its
  21.    limitations, etc ?

  23. 2. Is it worth the $1300 to $1500 (w/out a C 
  24.    compiler)...

  26. 3. Any other observations?

  28. 4. Obviously one is floating point, the other int.
  29.    I'm leaning towards the 'C30.  Wise move ?

  32. I'm a Ph.D candidate in EE (DSP/speech), and have
  33. a strong professional audio background.  Application
  34. of the board would be to learn more about DSP
  35. assembly algorithms, and to find out about what
  36. you can and cannot do with a single given DSP
  37. chip and a PC platform.  My host platform is a
  38. Gateway '486/33.

  40. I'm pretty well versed on basic to medium-
  41. level DSP _theory_, I'm just ready to get neck-
  42. deep into DSP assembly, and am wondering what
  43. hindsight previous folks can offer.

  45. I also realize that the cheapest way is to build
  46. my own PC board (plug-in or stand-alone), but I'm
  47. not sure that I want to take the time to wrestle with 
  48. the unfun tasks of host port interfacing, trouble-
  49. shooting hardware, writing host drivers, and all
  50. that other stuff. ... Thus the reason to buy
  51. Ariel's package...

  53. Note that this all will be paid for
  54. from a small grant I got from the AES, so spending
  55. $1500 won't wipe me out.  But I cannot afford more 
  56. than this.
