-
- While what you say about other communication solutions is true, the other
- solutions do not lend themselves so readily to automated mailing list
- generation as Caller-ID does. If Caller-ID worked by having a mechanical
- hand pop out of the phone to scribble my number down on a piece of paper
- (semi-legibly, so YOU could read it but a SCANNER/OCR couldn't), then I
- wouldn't be so mad about not being able to block my number.
-
- Since the service was introduced in my area (apparently last year while
- I was living in Atlanta temporarily), there has been a significant increase
- in telemarketing calls from LOCAL businesses. Olan Mills always has and
- always will annoy me, but now every Tom/Dick/Harry siding/pest control/
- home security/heating & cooling outfit IN TOWN is calling. And yes, I use
- my phone to call local businesses to check on prices, and this includes
- Builder's Square, HomeQuarters, and other hardware-type stores. I wish I
- knew which one it was so I could take my business elsewhere.
-
- But *IF* I were able to permanently block my number (with code to unblock
- on a per-call basis), then what you say about Caller-ID is true... it's no
- more intrusive (in general) than other forms of communication. But not
- everybody can block, so it *IS* incredibly aggravating for some of us.
