-
- By Call Display do you mean "Caller-ID?" If so, there are big differences.
- Caller-ID just displays the number... if the caller was a heavy-breather
- or worse, you jot the number down, call the police and give them the number,
- and they call it and the person on the other end denies having made the
- call. You protest, saying you've got your little slip of paper with the
- number written on it. B.F.D. say the police; that's HARDLY *proof* that
- the call was actually placed.
-
- So, that's why Call Trace (which, incidentally, does in fact cost you every
- time you use it) is offered. Unless you use Call Trace, you have no proof
- (admissable in court) that the alledged call occurred.
-
- This is what really gets me. The TelCo markets Caller-ID as somehow
- protecting personal privacy from intimidating calls, knowing full well that
- nothing you do with Caller-ID is worth a damn when it comes to trying to
- stop a real prank caller. Only Call Trace is really evidence. But, oh, if
- you happen to be a business, look at the deal we've got for you! Names and
- numbers of everyone who calls you, with a cross-referenced database to get
- their address, too!
