- I am planning a Computer Managed Learning (CML) facility to operate from
- a Sun ELC server to be delivered via ethernet to networked Macintosh LC
- II computers. The CML system will deliver an individualized printed quiz
- to each student upon application every two weeks (say), and each students
- would then have two or three days to key in his or her response. The CML
- system would score the response and respond appropriately, and it would
- keep a record of individual student interaction with the system.
-
- The choice of printed quiz rather than interactive use of the computer is
- partly economic and partly educational. Economic because we can run a
- lot of students through a limited number of machines at the average rate
- of some 15 minutes per student per quiz. Educational because the whole
- exercise is designed to encourage students to do regular work, and to
- give the student immediate feedback on his results.
-
- The CML system would initially use text and simple graphics, but should
- be capable of eventual extension to deliver pictures in 16-bit color as
- well as digital video (e.g., Apple's Quicktime). Authoring should use
- simple desktop publishing techniques. I am not aware of any extant CML
- systems with these specifications, and hence we are designing our own.
-
- It is proposed to build this system around Oracle, but I am a biochemist
- and I need advice from people who have experience with related systems.
- Is Oracle as good as any other data base for this job? Is Oracle-Card
- for the Macintosh a suitable front end? Are there alternative databases
- and front ends that I should consider? Does anybody have such a system
- already going, and, if so, are you interested in collaborating, or in
- selling your experience?
