Unless you have a strong streak of masochism the TeXbook is not for beginniers.
Much better books are:
TeX for the Impatient by Paul Abrahams -- Addison-Wesley 1990 or
A Beginner's Book of TeX by Raymond Seroul and Silvio Levy - -Springer-Verlag
