  9.  ASAP (A Simple Approach to Problems) is an easy-to-use knowledge
  10.  acquisition tool that automatically generates consultable
  11.  expert systems.
  12.  
  13.  ASAP is tailored for classification type expert systems like
  14.  diagnostic, help desks, selection, disposition systems or
  15.  process control.
  16.  
  17.  ASAP contains two knowledge editors:
  18.  - A Graphical editor, allows design decision trees in an easy
  19.    way on the screen
  20.  - A Textual editor, that allows to enter the knowledge as
  21.    "knowledge pieces", e.g. as possible causes of fault in
  22.    a diagnostic system.
  23.  Both editors can be used  for developing the same knowledge base.
  24.  A translator converts the KB from on editors knowledge model
  25.  to the other's.

  27.  The ASAP Development environment generates a knowledge base,
  28.  that is interpreted by the ASAP Runtime environment.
  29.  The Runtime environment
  30.  - contains the Inference engine
  31.  - the user dialog screens
  32.  - interfaces for external routines (e.g. database access)
  33.  - Trace, Undo and Redo functions
  34.  - is available in different versions:
  35.    + as a C-written stand alone module
  36.    + as TIRS module (TIRS = The Integrated Reasoning Shell - IBM
  37.      Programm Product)
  38.    + Other runtime version in any other AI or procedural Languages
  39.      can be developed, as the ASAP KB format is open (e.g.
  40.      a PROLOG Runtime version is under development).

  42.  ASAP can easily be integrated into other software environments.

  44.  It can integrate Pictures as explanations and has interfaces, that
  45.  makes it easy to integrate Multimedia functions, as movies or sound.

  47.  It runs under OS/2 2.0 (the Beta version also runs under OS/2 1.3).

  49.  ASAP has been developed by the KBS groups of IBM Vimercate/Italy,
  50.  IBM Sindelfingen/Germany and IBM Santa Theresa Lab/CA USA.

  52.  The ASAP Beta Version is available. The Beta Test runs until March 93.
  53.  It involves IBM selected customers in that Beta Test.
