- There is one big problem in our dependence on oil that was recognized by Bush
- as well as Clinton: we have become increasingly dependent on foreign oil.
- This makes us subject to whatever pricing scheme that OPEC decides to give us.
- Putting down more holes in the US will not solve the problem. If ANWR is
- opened up and all the oil pumped out (according to Oil Co. estimates) it would
- last only about 9 or 10 months as a sole-source for US needs. As a source
- combined with foreign oil, it would, at best, prolong the end another 15-20
- years. Simple conservation acts, like replacing all the incandescent bulbs
- in the US with compact fluorescents and increasing the average gas mileage
- of new cars by 10mpg would yield energy savings equivalent to all the oil in
- ANWR or more.
-
- Further, if we wait on this, all of the countries who now pay high prices for
- oil will get the jump on us in energy saving technology, and we may find
- ourselves more dependent on foreign powers for our energy. If you think Japan,
- a country that has to import all of their oil, is going to ignore this, buy a
- box of compact fluorescents and see where they're made.
