- True, but stores aren't obligated to accept personal checks either. They
- do have agreements with VISA et al to accept their credit cards. The
- basic difference is that when the store accepts a check, they're assuming
- the risk if it bounces, but once VISA approves your credit-card purchase
- the store is off the hook.

- If you don't like the store's policy (and you can't talk them out of it)
- you can always pay cash -- I've never heard of anyone demanding personal
- information to accept a dollar bill. But if you want to pay with a check,
- they're entitled to get some information to help them verify that you're
- not trying to rip them off.
