- The CA&E Railroad did use third-rail power on most of its private
- right-of-way, but the trains were also designed to operate on power
- from overhead trolley lines. At the outer reaches of places like
- Aurora, the trains were broken up into single-car units and operated
- as streetcars -- one of the reasons why they were so slow.
-
- In the early days of the CA&E (operation began in 1902) the Railroad
- generated its own power, but by the 1920s it began buying power from
- Com Ed and, by 1930, closed down its generating facility (in Batavia).
-
- Part of the deal between the CA&E and Com Ed included easements on
- the railroad's right of way; thus, overhead wires can be found on
- some old pictures of the right-of-way, but not all.
-
- Finally, I might note that the Geneva branch is somewhat different
- from the rest, in that operation there ceased in 1937 while the
- rest of the system continued to operate until 1957 (it was formally
- abandoned in 1961, at which time the rails were sold for scrap).
-
- Thus Com Ed purchased the Geneva Branch right-of-way outright, but
- the remainder became owned by public agencies. Of course, Com Ed
- retained the easements after the bankruptcy court disposed of the
- CA&E's assets...
-
- The Aurora Public Library (Benton St.) has a good collection of
- books on the history of the CA&E, and other local history --
- and offers reciprocal borrowing privileges to most library card holders.
