  11. My repeated attempts to run nb4 under Windows 3.1 have so far
  12. been futile, and I would very much appreciate responses from
  13. those of you who do run Windows successfully without DR.Dos and
  14. more sophisticated programs.

  16.   I have an AST Bravo (386 SX) and have recently installed addi-
  17. tional memory (4 MB RAM).
  18.  
  19. Before X-mas Poul Bodin helped me tremendously well into a fine
  20. tuning of my config.sys to load from DOS. Following his sugges-
  21. tions to start with
  22.       DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE 128 m9 ram
  23. and then
  24.   First try increasing the amount of EMS memory your system makes
  25.   to 256.  If that doesn't help, try moving the page frame by
  26.   changing m9 to m8, m7, m6 and so on down to m5.
  27. Accordingly my full Bodin-CONFIG.SYS file reads:
  28.   device=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
  29.   device=C:\WINDOWS\emm386.exe 256 m5 ram
  30.   dos=high,umb
  31.   devicehigh=C:\WINDOWS\ramdrive.sys 1024 /E
  32.   devicehigh=C:\WINDOWS\smartdrv.sys 256
  33.   country=045,850,c:\dos\country.sys
  34.   devicehigh=c:\dos\display.sys con=(ega,,1)
  35.   files=30
  36.   buffers=15

  38. The operation system loads seemlessly, and nb4 also, except that
  39. loading configuration files can take some time. Otherwise, it
  40. results in a pretty stable dos-based operation of NB, the speller
  41. is in EMS, I mostly get along to have 100 k files functioning
  42. with Ibid, Orbis and spelling available.

  44. Recently, Paul Caron has assisted me in my problems with loading
  45. nb4 within windows, and spend an awful lot of time with me trying
  46. to cheat Windows. He has introduced me to any known way to start
  47. a non-Windows application, but to no avail - Paul is much smarter
  48. and much more helpfull than my machine!

  50. The problem in Windows is as follows:
  51. - When I click my NB4 Icon no execution takes place, excecpt for
  52.   the messages:
  53.         the working directory is invalid.
  54.         Check PIF
  55.     But my NB.PIF is all right:
  56.         Program Filename:       NB.COM
  57.         Windows Title:          Nota Bene 4
  58.         Start-up Directory:     c:\[backslash]NB4
  59. - When I do the Run-command, the result is a little bit better.
  60.   It loads the drivers, but then stops completely in the middle
  61.   of loading of the configuration files! I can sometimes force it
  62.   to exit NB (CTRL-SHT-ALT-ESC), but sometimes have to reboot
  63.   completely.
  64. - Same for BATCH-program
  65.         copy con nb.bat
  66.         @echo off
  67.         c:[backslash]nb4[backslash]nb.com
  68.   when run as PIF-file
  69. - Same for the Run-command COMMAND, which got me to DOS and the
  70.   usual NB-command, but still ended me stuck in loading con-
  71.   figuration files.
  72.     I have tried /b- switch, /k-switch etc, but of no avail.

  75.   DO YOU HAVE A CONFIGURATION FOR WINDOWS THAT COULD IMPROVE ON
  76.   MY PRESENT ONE?

  81.   SHOULD I AMMEND A PATH STATEMENT SOMEWHERE IN THE NB CONFIGURA-
  82.   TION FILES?
  83.   NB.COM is certainly in C:\NB4. But when I check the path I fidn
  84.   a very curious situation:
  85. - When I have loaded the system files (after the DOS promt), and
  86.   check path, the message I get corresponds exactly with my
  87.   AUTOEXEC.BAT:
  88.     path=C:\;C:\NB4;C:\PM;C:\PM4;C:\DOS;C:\WINDOWS;....
  89. - However, when I have loaded NB from DOS, and then check the
  90.   path, I get the message:
  91.     path=C:\NB4\;C:\;C:\;C:\NB4;C:\PM;C:\PM4;C:\DOS;C:\WINDOWS;C:
  92.     \NC;C:\COMPRESS;C:\TPW;C:\WP51;
  93. - HOW CAN
  94.         C:\[backslash]NB4\[backslash];C:\[backslash];
  95.     KREEP INTO THE SYSTEM BY LOADING NB???? (I have no know
  96.   autoexec.bats that could create this sequence)
  97.     Is NB4\[backslash] damaging?

  99. I would be happy with almost any good suggestion (except for
  100.   quitting Windows 3.1). I am at a total loss.
