- Subject: NB Lingua, Windows - a desperate cry
- Newsgroups: bit.listserv.notabene

-
- My repeated attempts to run nb4 under Windows 3.1 have so far
- been futile, and I would very much appreciate responses from
- those of you who do run Windows successfully without DR.Dos and
- more sophisticated programs.
-
- I have an AST Bravo (386 SX) and have recently installed addi-
- tional memory (4 MB RAM).
-
- Before X-mas Poul Bodin helped me tremendously well into a fine
- tuning of my config.sys to load from DOS. Following his sugges-
- tions to start with
- DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE 128 m9 ram
- and then
- First try increasing the amount of EMS memory your system makes
- to 256. If that doesn't help, try moving the page frame by
- changing m9 to m8, m7, m6 and so on down to m5.
- Accordingly my full Bodin-CONFIG.SYS file reads:
- device=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
- device=C:\WINDOWS\emm386.exe 256 m5 ram
- dos=high,umb
- devicehigh=C:\WINDOWS\ramdrive.sys 1024 /E
- devicehigh=C:\WINDOWS\smartdrv.sys 256
- country=045,850,c:\dos\country.sys
- devicehigh=c:\dos\display.sys con=(ega,,1)
- files=30
- buffers=15
- STACKS=9,256
- The operation system loads seemlessly, and nb4 also, except that
- loading configuration files can take some time. Otherwise, it
- results in a pretty stable dos-based operation of NB, the speller
- is in EMS, I mostly get along to have 100 k files functioning
- with Ibid, Orbis and spelling available.
-
- Recently, Paul Caron has assisted me in my problems with loading
- nb4 within windows, and spend an awful lot of time with me trying
- to cheat Windows. He has introduced me to any known way to start
- a non-Windows application, but to no avail - Paul is much smarter
- and much more helpfull than my machine!
-
- The problem in Windows is as follows:
- - When I click my NB4 Icon no execution takes place, excecpt for
- the messages:
- the working directory is invalid.
- Check PIF
- But my NB.PIF is all right:
- Program Filename: NB.COM
- Windows Title: Nota Bene 4
- Start-up Directory: c:\[backslash]NB4
- - When I do the Run-command, the result is a little bit better.
- It loads the drivers, but then stops completely in the middle
- of loading of the configuration files! I can sometimes force it
- to exit NB (CTRL-SHT-ALT-ESC), but sometimes have to reboot
- completely.
- - Same for BATCH-program
- copy con nb.bat
- @echo off
- c:[backslash]nb4[backslash]nb.com
- when run as PIF-file
- - Same for the Run-command COMMAND, which got me to DOS and the
- usual NB-command, but still ended me stuck in loading con-
- figuration files.
- I have tried /b- switch, /k-switch etc, but of no avail.
-
- QUESTION 1
- DO YOU HAVE A CONFIGURATION FOR WINDOWS THAT COULD IMPROVE ON
- MY PRESENT ONE?
- Feel free to send a copy privately and I promise to try it out
- (Nicolai Winther-Nielsen <INNWN@VM2.UNI-C.DK>)
-
- QUESTION 2
- SHOULD I AMMEND A PATH STATEMENT SOMEWHERE IN THE NB CONFIGURA-
- TION FILES?
- NB.COM is certainly in C:\NB4. But when I check the path I fidn
- a very curious situation:
- - When I have loaded the system files (after the DOS promt), and
- check path, the message I get corresponds exactly with my
- AUTOEXEC.BAT:
- path=C:\;C:\NB4;C:\PM;C:\PM4;C:\DOS;C:\WINDOWS;....
- - However, when I have loaded NB from DOS, and then check the
- path, I get the message:
- path=C:\NB4\;C:\;C:\;C:\NB4;C:\PM;C:\PM4;C:\DOS;C:\WINDOWS;C:
- \NC;C:\COMPRESS;C:\TPW;C:\WP51;
- - HOW CAN
- C:\[backslash]NB4\[backslash];C:\[backslash];
- KREEP INTO THE SYSTEM BY LOADING NB???? (I have no know
- autoexec.bats that could create this sequence)
- Is NB4\[backslash] damaging?
-
- I would be happy with almost any good suggestion (except for
- quitting Windows 3.1). I am at a total loss.
