- I recently did something like this on the fly, by editing the underscore
- mode to make it an underdot mode. I can't give details here at work, where
- I don't have any documentation or even a copy of NB, but I located the
- underscore mode, used the Customization Manual and the HP manual to help me
- interpret what I was seeing, and replaced the part that said start
- underlining with something that said backspace, move downward, print a
- period, ... Obviously this won't work well with proportional fonts.
-
- Another solution that occurs to me would be to edit the font to make an
- alternative underdotted version, but I presume we are dealing with one of
- those blasted encrypted fonts NBI is so fond of.
-
- On another note, I've been looking at the new SIL TrueType IPA font. The
- diacritics are set up so they print under the preceding letter - very nice!
- Of course, they have to provide a set of alternatives for each diacritic, to
- handle different width and height/depth characters. Also, some of my
- favorite diacritics, like the nasal hook, are missing, since they're not IPA
- usage. I'm looking forward to receiving the commercial version with c. 900
- symbols! The version I'm working with is copyrighted freeware; the
- commercial version is $64, including postage and handling to US addresses.
- On the down side, until I can figure out how to rasterize TT fonts, I can't
- use them with NB. I was able to use the IPA fonts (at any point size) with
- MS Word, using TT for DOS to build the driver.
