- In reply to Steve Jone's question about copyright -
-
- We have looked at the problem (briefly) at Southampton with some input from
- a tame legal expert and careful consideration of the Universities
- regulations on copyright - this is something you may have overlooked Steve,
- but basically, something done in University time on University equipment
- may well be, by default, copyright of the University.
-
- Anyway, our conclusions were as follows -
-
- Anything on the CWIS is copyright of Southampton University, and we say
- this on the opening screen
-
- UNLESS
-
- it is explicitly stated in a particular document/file that the copyright
- resides elsewhere.
-
- Although we don't explicitly state this (and perhaps we should) we will not
- object to material being re-produced by end-users UNLESS the document/file
- actually states that it is not to be reproduced.
-
- We are given to understand that we could, if required, prosecute for mis-
- use of a document (perhaps, say, to mis-represent the university) but in
- order to do this, we would need to prove that the document did in fact
- originate with Southampton. This would entail producing satisfactory
- evidence. One way we MIGHT be able do this is through our administration
- system which tracks the progress of documents through the system and date
- stamps - whether this is rigorous enough for the courts is another question
- - it certainly wasn't designed with copyright enforcement as the primary
- objective.
-
- So far we have had no problems with this, and in fact a few people have
- been polite enough to ask permission to use documents, even though they may
- not have needed to.
