  13. IUBio Archive has had it's main disk fail.  This gigabyte
  14. disk drive will cost at least $1500 to replace.  We have also
  15. been seeking support from the community who uses this
  16. archive to obtain more gigabytes of disk, to let me continue
  17. to make available to the public this biology software and data.
  18.  
  19. I've received around a dozen replies to my request for help.
  20. I thank all of those who have replied, but there are many
  21. more of you using this archive (hundreds to thousands of
  22. sites per week, at around 7000 transactions per week).
  23. If those of you who haven't sent word of support, but
  24. would like to see this archive continue to be available 
  25. and expand it services could mail a note of support to
  26.     archive@bio.indiana.edu
  27. it will help my efforts to obtain more disk drives.
  28. If you can pledge some funds, $50 or $25 or whatever,
  29. I'll welcome that.  I have a lead for asking a grant
  30. agency, but that may not pan out (it hasn't yet).

  32. The archive is now available again, but it is using
  33. a disk on loan from the Biology Department here on
  34. a strictly temporary basis.  The Drosophila stock center,
  35. which purchased the current archive computer, can
  36. find funds to replace the the dead disk.   I would be
  37. happy if those who are getting the most use of this
  38. disk, rather than the stock center, could help in
  39. replacing it, and in buying an expansion disk.

  47.          IUBIO ARCHIVE SEEKS CONTRIBUTIONS
  48.                for a new disk drive

  50. Since 1989, the IUBio Archive has been providing the
  51. scientific community with a useful collection of biology
  52. software, data and information services.   This archive
  53. has been sponsored by Don Gilbert and Indiana University 
  54. sources, and recently by the Bloomington Drosophila stock
  55. center thru an NSF Resources grant.
  56.  
  57. During 1992, the archive thru FTP and Gopher has been
  58. serving out data to the biology scientific community at
  59. high rates.   Roughly 2500 files per week are FTP'ed from
  60. the archive, and roughly 4500 gopher transactions per week
  61. are recorded (file transfers and queries).

  63. Also during that time, I have experimented with new
  64. information services here, including Internet Gopher and
  65. WAIS service additions and modifications for biology
  66. databanks.

  68. We are approaching capacity on the current 1 Gigabyte disk 
  69. that serves this archive.  I am having to spend more time
  70. throwing out or compressing data than I like.  So far, I've
  71. preserved all the good stuff in this archive.  But we need
  72. a new disk to expand services as I would like to, and to
  73. provide me with a blank canvas to draw more bioinformatics 
  74. experiments on.

  76. Since the current hardware sponsor, the Drosophila stock
  77. center via NSF, is using only a small portion of this disk
  78. but needs more, I would like to ask if other sponsor(s)
  79. might contribute to this resource.  Of course a large,
  80. popular use is the Gopher and WAIS searches of up-to-date
  81. GenBank and other molecular databanks, along with the
  82. popular software.

  84. Those of you who may know of an agency willing to
  85. contribute $2,000 for a new Gigabyte sized hard
  86. drive, please let me know.  Those of you who may want to 
  87. contribute in part to this disk drive fund, please also 
  88. let me know.
