- It's going to be San Jose. That's where Amtrak will be moving over
- the next several years. A state-of-the-art joint Amtrak/CalTrain
- maintenance facility is going to be built near Lick (a couple miles
- south of Tamien CalTrain station in San Jose). It is likely that
- Amtrak will extend the Zephyr and San Joaquins to San Jose too.

-
- Technically, it's quite possible. FRA regulations and such might have
- to be bent/modified a bit. In Germany, they are now sharing a piece
- of DB mainline with light rail equipment that is equipped for dual
- voltage running and has the appropriate signalling stuff installed to
- ply the mainline.

-
- One lane on each deck would be converted to rail use. This issue is
- one of the potential "killers"--even though the project can easily be
- shown to increase total bridge capacity dramatically.

-
- There is one RR right of way running along the peninsula, but for most
- of its length, it is wide enough for 4 tracks. Some parts are a bit
- tight, but adding tracks is considered quite "doable". (All of the
- tight spots that come to mind are in San Mateo county.) Remember
- too, that the Dumbarton Bridge rail line is a nice unused right of way
- just waiting to be bought for something like $12 million. It connects
- Redwood City/Menlo Park with Fremont/Union City.
