- I had a long talk with a Pac Bell data service rep the other day, and I
- asked about ISDN. According to her, there are two ISDN services-
- Centrex and switched 56kbs. They're both layered on top of
- ISDN. Both cost about $45 a month, plus usage (same rates as voice, for
- residential). Centrex costs $630 for installation, SBS installation
- will be free after March 3rd. Both require two CSU/DSUs at ~$500 each.
-
- I had her look up what's available where I live (Mountain View) and
- both services were available. Usually only one or the other is.
-
- The price of the CSU/DSU, plus the cost of routers to tie into the
- LAN are the killers to me. You can get 56kbs V32bis modems now for ~$400.
- Netblazers support 56kbs serial lines. If your machine at home
- can do 56kbs on its serial line, you can run SLIP/PPP and you're set.
-
-
- Note: I may have the structure of Centrex/ISDN/SBS confused; I'm still
- learning about this stuff.
