- I just attended my first Friday night movie showing at Oakland's Paramount
- theater, and wanted to let others know what an incredible show this is.
-
- I hadn't been to the Paramount for many years, and the restoration of its
- interior has brought it back to the grand 30's Art Deco showplace that it
- was when first built. Everything about the place, the lobbies, the halls,
- the bathrooms, the main auditorium is a treat to the sensibilities. It
- seems to combine just about everything that the Art Deco architectural
- movement had to offer -- at times, perhaps, to the point of overkill.
-
- The presentation of the movies begins with a half-hour of theater organ
- playing, followed by a news reel (last night's featured a brush fire in the
- hills of Southern California -- which elicted strong applause -- as well
- as footage of 60's war protests in Oakland, and a few other things), a
- Warner Brother's cartoon, and a load of trailers. After this the house
- lights are brought up, the organist returns, and a host and assistant
- ("Miss Lisa") play "Dec-O-Win", spinning the giant wheel and giving away
- prizes (mostly tickets to upcoming shows, but also dinners at local
- restaurants) to lucky ticket holders. Finally, after all of this preshow
- entertainment, they present the feature film on a GIGANTIC screen.
-
- The sound didn't have quite the surround capabilities that you'd expect in
- a modern movie theater, but the audience was exceptionally attentive and
- quiet (nearly 3,000 people!), and it was really no problem. We were sitting
- about 30 rows back, off to the side a bit, and the sight lines were just
- fine.
-
- All in all, probably the best entertainment value (only $5!) I've found in
- awhile. Parking was simple, and it's very convenient to BART (1/2 block
- from the 19th St. station).
-
- Upcoming movies in the Friday night series include:
-
- 1/29 South Pacific
- 2/5 Guys and Dolls
- 2/19 The African Queen
-
- Showtime is 8pm, with music beginning at 7.30. There are also nights they
- show travel films, silent films with organ accompanyment, and lots of other
- things.
