- I was having a drink with a few friends recently, and one of them mentioned
- that they would be teaching a class in ISDN. ( They work for the phone com-
- -pany. ) I expressed interest, and s/he mentioned that Northern California
- customers would be able to order ISDN service at home around August of this
- year.
-
- Home service evaluates to two channels - presumably but not necessarily
- voice and data - for less than the cost of two lines today. Each channel
- is 64kb ... which makes 9600 baud look like a slow crawl, and incidentally
- may make such modems somewhat obsolete.
-
- So it looks like we're finally going to get serious networking services at
- home ... and the possible business niches that offer themselves are numerous.
- Data services, digital phonebooks for entire areas, video data transmission
- that may render fax obsolete and give color reproduction a needed jolt, all
- sorts of neat stuff.
-
- It's worth noting that the new Sun Sparc 10s come with ISDN built in along
- with ethernet, I believe, and this may be true for other workstations, also.
- ISDN may be the Appletalk/BMUGnet/PhoneNet of the 90s ...
-
- Interestingly enough, not a whole lot was said about ISDN at InterOp, at least
- on the trade floor, and ethernet and FDDI were the big players. This, too, is
- expected to change ...
