- Yes, it exists, hosted by University of New England Distance Education
- Centre. It is accessible by AARNet, but because it is an ORACLE database
- rather than a collection of files downloadable by anon ftp, you really
- should get the "Information and Instructions Guide", phone UNE DEC on 067
- 732 098 (sorry, don't have an email address to cite). The Guide booklet
- contains username and password specifications. I'm told that it is "down"
- for the whole of this week, for maintenance.
-
- By the way, the question of which is the better approach, a database such
- as used in this case, or a collection of files for anon ftp. I think that
- the Directory is really awful to access via Oracle type approach. I think
- that it would have been so much easier for all parties if we had used a
- collection of files for anon ftp, with a simple hierarchial directory
- structure, and with each file available in various formats such as .txt,
- .ps, Word for mac, Word for DOS, etc. Each institution could then update
- its files as required, rather than a once a year update.
-
- What was really needed was the book version available for downloading in
- appropriately sized chunks, not a "database". It is a very good publication
- (a credit to UNE DEC's work), and the best searching tool is the book's
- table of contents and index of institutions. The book is Directory of
- Tertiary ExternalCourse in Australia available from Distance Education
- Centre, University of New England, Armidale NSW 2351, price I'm not sure
- about.
