-
- > How is Austel approval worked out for imported units?
-
- There is no such beast. ALL units are made in Australia, and are allocated
- an ESN which is an electronic serial number, in PROM or on the board. This
- is used to uniquely identify each handset. Certain countries outside OZ have
- bileteral agreement to share the same ESN space so you can TEMPORARILY come
- into the country with an external phone and use it, with bills going back to
- your home account.
-
- You can't buy a unit without an ESN, and transferring the ESN from one handset
- to another is very naughty. Its a cartel, call it what you want, but thats
- how it is.
-
- > How does import affect warranty/maintenance inside Australia?
-
- You can't get there from here so its a non-issue
-
- > Is there any real price advantage?
-
- No. The overseas cheapo's are using standards like CT2 which is not used here.
-
- > Does anybody have a recommended unit?
-
- No. Don't do it.
