- Subject: WAIS mentioned in MacWeek
-
- Seen in the January 4, 1993 issue of MacWeek (page 1 story "Apple architecture
- promises mix-and-match networking"):
-
- "Sources said Apple is developing server software that may include intelligent
- agents that can act as proxies for individual users when they are not
- physically connected to the network...
-
- "Taradalsky cited Apple's Rosebud project, a WAIS (Wide Area Information
- Server) client application demonstrated during the past year, as an early
- example of the type of intelligent agents it plans for the servers.
-
- "'We also must provide a lot of needed value to customers who have a lot of
- information in unstructured form,' he said, adding that users will value 'being
- able to find information whether it's stored locally or in the libraries of
- other providers.'"
-
- (Morris Taradalsky is Vice President and general manager of Apple's Enterprise
- Systems Division. The above quotes were cited as being delivered at a
- "briefing last month")

-
- Brewster,
-
- Thanks for the data. As you can see, it fits the canonical
- network service exponential growth curve, after you the initial
- seeding you mentioned.
-
- Thanks,
- John

-
-
- Ok, it's been long enough already.
-
- I just hacked together a WAIS Mail server. It's not particularly robust,
- but it works (all due to the magic of perl!).
-
- To use it, send the appropriate message to waismail@quake.think.com
-
- Appropriate messages are:
-
- search <source-name> {keywords...}
-
- <source-name> is a source name as found in the directory of servers
- (without the .src ending!).
- {keywords...} are the words you would normally type into a query.
-
- retrieve DOCID
-
- DOCID is a DocID as returned by a search above. It's a rather ugly thing,
- so don't mess with it (it's actually just the DocID waisretrieve can
- handle).
-
- (Note: you can substitute "DocID:" for "retrieve", which means all you
- really have to do is cut and paste)
-
- The word "search" or "retrieve" (or "DocID:") must be in the first column.
- Right now it limits the maximum results to 10.
-
- Only one search is allowed per message (the last one will be used), but
- multiple retrievals are possible (try it).
-
- Here are some examples (using the weather server, doing one search and one
- retrieval):

- Subject: A couple of WAIS questions
-
- I have a couple of questions which might be in a FAQ somewhere, if they are
- sorry about that, could you let me know how to find this...?
-
- Question 1: How would one go about restricting access to some of one's WAIS
- databases, but not all? Let's say I have two types of databases: one which
- should be available to anyone in the entire world (press releases, product
- information etc), and internal documentation which should be restricted to
- people within my own organisation.
-
- The only way I can think of doing this is to have two different WAISservers
- running, with a TCP wrapper and access control list around one. Is this
- really the case, or is there a cleaner way of doing this?
-
- Question 2: Is it possible to query a WAIS server and get a list of all the
- databases it serves? I have seen 'swais' give a list of all the databases
- on the server, but I can't find an option to use 'swais' with remote
- servers. My Mac waisstation doesn't seem to have any options to query the
- remote server for this.
-
- Thanks in advance for any info,
