- Frank J Sereno quotes critic David Browne of 'Entertainment Weekly' :
-
- "It's ridiculous to continue thinking of rock as standing for anything it
- once did--rebellion, anxiety, teen hormonal frenzy, distrust of
- authority. And the rock inaugural is also definitive, saddening proof
- that rock 'n' roll is now merely music, merely entertainment..."
-
- I think that the definition offered -- rebellion, etc. -- is much more
- of a "merely" than music; what DBrown seems to feel rock should be would
- preclude its enjoyment by anyone matured past high school age. It would
- be something outgrown, like cutting class, or smoking in the boys' room.
- Now, I'm all for staying young (don't even _think_ about calling me a
- grownup), but that has a lot more to do with observing the world with
- wonder, with holding some ideals, and with not taking things too
- seriously, than with hormones and teen angst.
-
- Neil Young is a perfect example of this. He has matured, and grown to
- appreciate, well, family life -- picking up the kids in a Dodge Caravan
- -- but he still can write wonderful, introspective songs. Sure, he gets
- pissed-off, and a little rebellious, but he's grown way beyond "We're
- Not Gonna' Take It", and we can be thankful for it. Instead he gives us
- thoughtful music, from the eyes of an artist; should we have to abandon
- rock music to the teenyboppers and turn on some Glenn Miller to get
- that? (Nothing against Glenn Miller, of course)
