-
- Quoting from Webster's New World Dictionary, second college edition:
-
- sub-due vt. [...] 1. to bring into subjection; conquer; vanquish
- [...] 5. to bring (land) under cultivation - SYN. see CONQUER
-
- re-plen-ish vt. [...] 1. to make full or complete again, as by
- furnishing a new supply [...]
-
- Unless you've got a different dictionary, there is nothing on the same
- continent as "hopelessly contrary" in these two words. If you go with
- definition (1) of subdue, you have "dominion," which you seem to think
- everyone agrees we have; if you go with (5), you have essentially "to
- farm." The other three definitions of subdue admittedly do not seem to
- make sense in this context.
-
- The relationship between subduing and replenishing the earth is summed
- up nicely in the sig.
