- A state school? You should have said so earlier. Ask for a
- Privacy Act statement. Since they're a part of the government, they
- need to be able to provide one. If they can't, get a copy of the
- Privacy Act, and wave it under the nose of the manager responsible for
- the counseling office. If he doesn't change the policy, leave. Go to
- the schools legal department, and ask their opinion. Then call the
- Attorney General, and ask him for advice.
-
- If they can provide a Privacy Act statement, check and see
- that it is accurate. You might also choose to provide a false SSN,
- such as 078-05-1120, which is the number mentioned in the FAQ.
-
- Remember to be polite at all times when dealing with these
- people, and take notes of who you talk to, when, and what they said.
- You might also want to call the school paper, and get them to do a
- write-up of people screwed by their SSN being made available to
- criminals. The SSN FAQ in this group is also a useful thing to give
- to a reporter, as background.
-
- Good luck, and let us know what happens.
