- In article <11117@rls.UUCP>, randy@rls (Randall L. Smith) writes:
- >We in the US deeply distrust our government. To most of us government

- >government to us, equals more freedom and more wealth.

- >wealth. Wealth is diminished due to increases in the role of the

-
- What I find hard to understand is how this attitude you guys often
- keep talking about jibes with government-mandated drug test programs,
- heavy FCC contents censorship, in essence a civil war against
- dissidents who disagree on what psychoactive chemicals are OK to use,
- proposals like the Digital Telephony mandating an Orwellian phone
- network, restrictions on cryptography, secrecy orders on patents,
- president thinking atheists are not worthy of citizenship, death
- penalties, using armed forces against citizens, federal cops
- organizing harassment operations against dissidents (COINTELPRO), bans
- on many abortion-related and sex-related things, citizens not allowed
- to travel to "wrong" countries and all that jazz.
-
- Much of this is unheard of for example in Finland - police can't
- legally listen to any phone calls at all, for example - and Finland
- doesn't have this big tradition of freedom and distrust of government
- and doesn't even have a good constitution, and those oppressions which
- are implemented are implemented mostly in a much more less-violent,
- less-oppressive and less-intrusive form.
-
- Now don't get me wrong, I am not meaning this as an insult, I would
- really be interested in hearing your views on this. If I understand
- it right Chomsky's answer is that it's because of the media. (If your
- answer is "who is Chomsky" I wonder if it proves Chomsky is right).
-
- Finland has SSN's, by the way, and also has a "personal data
- protection act" which sets many limits on how the SSN may be used.
- It's still used too much by the big brother, the personal data
- protection act mostly covers the little brothers (private sector).
