  16. About 2 weeks ago, I posted a question to the above newsgroups that simply
  17. asked who read the groups. Respondents were asked to state only two things:
  18. their nationality and gender, thus for example, Belgian, Male. Here are the
  19. results of the survey, other remarks will follow. There were 88 people that
  20. responded as follows:

  38. * I was not able to determine the nationalities of 5 people who responded
  39. such as: Single White Female, Caucasian male, white male. Someone said
  40. Female, Heinz 57. I have no clue what Heinz 57 means!!

  42. There was really no reason for the survey. I was just looking through some of
  43. the newsgroups and couldn't believe some of what people said they wanted to
  44. do to others or have others do to themselves, i.e. in newsgroups such as
  45. alt.personals.bondage. So I thought, let me find out where some of these
  46. people come from. I am NOT infering that those who responded do all those
  47. things to themselves, so do not send me hate mail!! Also, I know that (or so
  48. it is said) some of the newsgroups are distributed world wide. So I wanted to
  49. know how world wide they are distributed.

  51. Some of the colorful comments that I received along with the responses may
  52. reveal the shortcomings of this *survey* (and I'm supposed to be a
  53. researcher!!). So here we go:

  55. *I'm addicted ... I read only alt.personals (occasionally) and alt.pers.ads
  56. *Actually, we Americans lack a true word for nationality. Canadians and
  57. Mexicans are both Americans, what I should really say is US citizen.
  58. *You oughta get ages too.
  59. *Of the newsgroups you posted to, I read only alt.personals.poly
  60. *But this isn't going to be useful because you can't tell which group the
  61. responding people read.
  62. *Now, if that doesn't bring to mind a few stereotypes. I read only
  63. alt.backrubs as opposed to all the others you cross posted to
  64. *Surveys? What a concept

  66. For some respondents, it was not enough to state their nationality, some went
  67. on to state data like: singlegle, male, heterosexual;; whitte 20 yrs old,
  68. military, American/Italian, American-German-Italian-Irish, American (Jewish),
  69. African American and thanks for asking, American Northeast, Canadian English
  70. WASP, Chinese-Canadian and I'm proud.

  72. Make of the comments whatever you wish. I think they were wonderful,
  73. insightful, revealing (of how we feel about who we are) and a good number of
  74. them were very funny!! I most certainly wish everyone of you out there
  75. whatever good things you wish for yourselves and others; long life,
  76. prosperity, happiness, etc. Oh, somebody thought the survey may just be a way
  77. for me to get e mail addresses from females!! What an idea. Yes, I am
  78. certainly male, single, available, employed, and I LOVE women. But I am not
  79. that stupid to start firing off messages to someone just because they are
  80. female. What if she is married, or lesbian, or has a gun-toting significant
  81. other? And besides, I'm just a foreigner here in the good US of A, and a
  82. minority at that. But despite all that, I am a happy go-lucky guy.
