- I hear this ad on the radio every day as I drive to work:
-
-
- she: It certainly is dark in here. Is the light burned out?
-
- he: No, the light is luz.
-
- she: The light is loose?
-
- he: Yes, and if you'll stand on this chair, you'll silla luz light.
-
- she: See a loose light?...! What a wonderful way to learn Spanish!
-
-
- (luz = light; silla = chair)

- Geez, what a dumb way to learn Spanish - or any other language. This might
- work if all you want to know are 12 words and no grammar when you go to
- Tijuana. I cannot believe anyone could learn a language this way. Suppose
- our translator used this technique in delivering a message from the President
- to the Iraqis and we could hear the mnemonic sentences he was using:
-
- Hillary: We intend to enforce the no-fly zone and uphold the U.N. resolutions..
-
- (translator's thoughts): A kudu dabs my twanger firmly. The yellow sun boils
- Achmed's hoof-soup, but goats may sleep inside for half-fare...
