- Mega!Peeve: My trip to the West Coast. I think I managed to squeeze in all
- the requisit California experiences, from Watching people surf in wet suits
- in the rain, eating Mexican food for breakfast, and, of course, riding from
- San Jose to Santa Cruz in a pick-up truck with two men who know all the
- words to "Truckin'"
-
- First !Peevesome thing i did: Shooting trip on Saturday the 9th. This
- featured lots of big burly men with facial hair, pick-up truck and weapons.
- Also booter, who had the boys eating out of her hand (an even more amazing
- feat when you realize that her hand was filled with rice cakes) and
- Curtis Yarvin, who looks like the male ingenue on a Saturday morning kids
- show from 1973, you know the only character that isn't wearing an overstuffed
- proto-muppet costume from the fine folks at Hanna-Barbera. Curtis was
- definitely the most elegantly dressed person on the shooting range, and he
- looked oh so cute as he raised the shotgun to his shoulder and drawled
- "Get offa mah land, ya varmint" or "Well, son, I guess you'll have to marry
- her now."
-
- Peeve: We never were able to get it together to make a dac-shaped target.
-
- Final !Peevesome Thing I did in California: Driving around Sunday night in
- a 1961 aquamarine Mercury Comet. This baby had the original dash board and
- I practically came from looking at the speedometer.
-
- First !Peeve experience back on the East Coast: Being picked up at JFK
- by Jim Dare, who identified himself by holding up a placard that said
- "Squick Me."
-
- Peeve: Too many damned articles to read without getting a headache, and
- all the stuff posted about the shooting trip's already expired off my spool.
- Several people promised to send me anything good that was posted whilst
- I was away, but did they? No!
-
- Since I don't know what's already been posted, It seems sort of silly to give
- my impressions of everyone. Some random observations:
-
- Geoff has an unshakable air of calm around him. If I were stuck in SF during
- an earthquake, I'd definitely want to be within 3 feet of Geoff, because I'm
- sure the earth would not be moving. Also, I can't think of a better word
- to describe his apartment than "well-appointed.
-
- drieux talks exactly the way he writes.
-
- Banta looks exactly as I imagined him, except that his eyes are very kind, and
- have a warm, soft glow as he described the childlike pleasure of pulling wings
- off flies.
-
- Nolan Hinshaw is the only person I've ever met who can talk so much, and so
- fast, that I am unable to get a word in edgewise.
-
- Don Pette is the typical Latin Lover type, well-dressed, gold chains in
- all the appropriate places. I'm sure he'd be fighting the women off with
- a stick if they weren't rendered unconscious by the overpowering cloud of
- aftershave that precedes and follows him wherever he goes.
-
- Don Baldwin - damn! I can think of anything peevesome to say about Baldwin.
- He's one of the nicest people I"ve ever met.
-
- JZ's a big cuddly teddy bear of a guy, who makes a mean pasta with clam
- sauce. I was delighted and charmed by his lovely wife Jill (pronounced
- Linda if you have a Boston accent), who shared interesting instructional
- videos with us.
-
- Bandy makes good beer, and looks better in my "I Love Barbie" earrings
- than I ever did.
-
- Scott Hampton is about 6 feet tall, 25, maybe 30 pounds. He's the sexiest
- man I've ever met.
-
- Bill Berbenich doesn't really look like anyone I've ever met, but perhaps
- I've been hanging around the wrong people. I think we scared him.
-
- Peeve: Leaving California.
-
- !Peeve: Coming home to a husbandless apartment!!
-
- Thanks one and all for a great time!!
