  11. Mega!Peeve:  My trip to the West Coast.  I think I managed to squeeze in all
  12. the requisit California experiences, from Watching people surf in wet suits
  13. in the rain, eating Mexican food for breakfast, and, of course, riding from
  14. San Jose to Santa Cruz in a pick-up truck with two men who know all the 
  15. words to "Truckin'"
  16.  
  17. First !Peevesome thing i did: Shooting trip on Saturday the 9th.  This 
  18. featured lots of big burly men with facial hair, pick-up truck and weapons.
  19. Also booter, who had the boys eating out of her hand (an even more amazing 
  20. feat when you realize that her hand was filled with rice cakes) and 
  21. Curtis Yarvin, who looks like the male ingenue on a Saturday morning kids 
  22. show from 1973, you know the only character that isn't wearing an overstuffed 
  23. proto-muppet costume from the fine folks at Hanna-Barbera.  Curtis was 
  24. definitely the most elegantly dressed person on the shooting range, and he 
  25. looked oh so cute as he raised the shotgun to his shoulder and drawled 
  26. "Get offa mah land, ya varmint" or "Well, son, I guess you'll have to marry 
  27. her now."  
  28.  
  29. Peeve:  We never were able to get it together to make a dac-shaped target.
  30.  
  31. Final !Peevesome Thing I did in California: Driving around Sunday night in
  32. a 1961 aquamarine Mercury Comet.  This baby had the original dash board and
  33. I practically came from looking at the speedometer.

  35. First !Peeve experience back on the East Coast:  Being picked up at JFK
  36. by Jim Dare, who identified himself by holding up a placard that said
  37. "Squick Me."
  38.  
  39. Peeve:  Too many damned articles to read without getting a headache, and
  40. all the stuff posted about the shooting trip's already expired off my spool.
  41. Several people promised to send me anything good that was posted whilst
  42. I was away, but did they?  No!
  43.  
  44. Since I don't know what's already been posted, It seems sort of silly to give
  45. my impressions of everyone.  Some random observations:
  46.  
  47. Geoff has an unshakable air of calm around him.  If I were stuck in SF during
  48. an earthquake, I'd definitely want to be within 3 feet of Geoff, because I'm
  49. sure the earth would not be moving.  Also, I can't think of a better word
  50. to describe his apartment than "well-appointed.
  51.  
  52. drieux talks exactly the way he writes.  
  53.  
  54. Banta looks exactly as I imagined him, except that his eyes are very kind, and
  55. have a warm, soft glow as he described the childlike pleasure of pulling wings
  56. off flies.
  57.  
  58. Nolan Hinshaw is the only person I've ever met who can talk so much, and so
  59. fast, that I am unable to get a word in edgewise.
  60.  
  61. Don Pette is the typical Latin Lover type, well-dressed, gold chains in 
  62. all the appropriate places.  I'm sure he'd be fighting the women off with
  63. a stick if they weren't rendered unconscious by the overpowering cloud of
  64. aftershave that precedes and follows him wherever he goes.
  65.  
  66. Don Baldwin - damn! I can think of anything peevesome to say about Baldwin.
  67. He's one of the nicest people I"ve ever met.  
  68.  
  69. JZ's a big cuddly teddy bear of a guy, who makes a mean pasta with clam
  70. sauce.  I was delighted and charmed by his lovely wife Jill (pronounced
  71. Linda if you have a Boston accent), who shared interesting instructional
  72. videos with us.
  73.  
  74. Bandy makes good beer, and looks better in my "I Love Barbie" earrings 
  75. than I ever did.
  76.  
  77. Scott Hampton is about 6 feet tall, 25, maybe 30 pounds. He's the sexiest 
  78. man I've ever met.
  79.  
  80. Bill Berbenich doesn't really look like anyone I've ever met, but perhaps
  81. I've been hanging around the wrong people.  I think we scared him.

  83. Peeve: Leaving California.
