  23. My dad is a football fanatic extraordinaire, and it's a rare winter 
  24. weekend indeed when he doesn't have the TV tuned to a game.  This is
  25. peevesome because it makes it rather difficult to carry on a conver-
  26. sation, and because being rather hard of hearing due to some radical
  27. kind of ear infection years ago, he always has the volume cranked
  28. way up.  I have very sensitive hearing, thanks in no small part to
  29. taking great precautions to avoid the dreaded Turboprop Ear, so the
  30. volume is particularly trying -- especially for someone who's not a
  31. sports fan.

  33. Being a part-time reluctant football viewer, I can't help acquiring
  34. a basic familiarity with the announcers, and this had led me to
  35. develop a venomous dislike for John Madden.  The guy has an incredibly
  36. irritating, adenoidal voice, and he never shuts up!  He seems to have
  37. a pathological fear of dead air, and will say something -- anything --
  38. to prevent so much as a moment of silence during the telecast. Adding 
  39. insult to injury is the fact that so many of his comments are so inane; 
  40. he contributes little but unnecessary noise.  Whenever I have to listen 
  41. to him, I have an almost overpowering urge to jump up and yell, "Will you 
  42. *shut up* for once in your life?!  Just fucking *shut up!*"  Howard Cosell
  43. annoyed a lot of people with his motor-mouthed commentary, but Madden is
  44. far worse.
