  11. I feel I can accept the version of the charter that Mike posted today,
  12. even though it leaves unresolved the issue of what to do about the issue
  13. of colonization.  And I suppose that there would never be a perfect
  14. defense against people who want to use the newsgroup to advance partisan
  15. agendas, and that the concept of "colonization" might not offer any help,
  16. except in venues where international diplomats carry on their discussions.

  18. I would, however, like it if the format of the charter could be "prettied
  19. up" a bit, but I'm sure Jan Isley can take care of that matter.

  29. Well, I never really saw that matter as the real issue anyway.  One's
  30. people may be under foreign domination without producing a feeling of
  31. being oppressed - but you just never know when and where and how you
  32. might be affected by the state of affairs.  I hope we could all agree
  33. that people would prefer being in a situation where their own
  34. traditions and cultures and customs and languages can be used freely,
  35. which is certainly not the case in most of the U.S. and Canada, when
  36. it comes to the lives of the First Peoples - at least not relative
  37. to what one would have found a few hundred years ago.  By these
  38. fairly objective standards, I think it *is* fair to say that coloni-
  39. zation is a reality.  Whether one wants to talk about that reality
  40. in the charter of a new newsgroup is a very different matter.
