  11. While we are on the subject of Saamis .... it never ceases to amaze me who
  12. incredibly diverse the readership of this conference is.... I joined as a
  13. California-born person seeking her heritage from the far north of Montana,
  14. ND, & Canada .... while still being actively interested in Indigenous "regalia"
  15. of other countries as well ... in particular the Balkans, Israel, and for
  16. the last 15 years, the Saamis.  It started out as intrigue, because to me
  17. "they" look like blond Navajos ... 'scuse me, blond Dine'.  The colors in the
  18. clothing however, bring me right back to the Chippewas where it all began
  19. for me, including making wool felt to survive the bitter cold.  All of a
  20. sudden, following simple questions about the term "Sami" ... here is this
  21. wealth of information about these amazing people.

  23. Now, for totally non-linguistics, and non-genetic reasons, I'm going to toss
  24. out a selfish request, since I'm more than willing to share anything I know
  25. in my field with almost anyone as long as it doesn't benefit Feds, the BIA,
  26. etc.  Do any of you have specific cultural information (including pictures,
  27. patterns, or whatever) about Saami material culture?  ... I'm especially
  28. interested in the Clothing (including folklore, taboos, or whatever), but
  29. not exclusively.  Their baskets are gorgeous; "traditional" moccasins
  30. looked wonderful (from a distance), as did a cradleboard I have a postcard
  31. of.  This one, single, large postcard I bought in Oslo is actually the only
  32. decent picture I have ever been able to find.

  34. Any suggestions, assistance, etc. any of you can give will be much appreciated.
  35. (but of course, I'm always looking for more/new stuff for the work I'm
  36. planning to do on my son's Chippewa regalia).
