  18.  
  19.     Once again, the Native American Outreach Organization (NAOO) at
  20. the University of Massachusetts, Lowell is asking for your help.
  21.  
  22.     As you may know, for the past several years we have provided
  23. assistance to the Wounded Knee community on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation
  24. in South Dakota by collecting and shipping donated clothing and food.  To keep
  25. shipping costs affordable, we rely on finding alternatives to standard freight
  26. transport - our Christmas 1991 donations went to Wounded Knee in an old school
  27. bus driven to Lowell, MA from South Dakota by members of the Wounded Knee
  28. community, with NAOO providing funds for the trip.
  29.  
  30.     Unfortunately, we were unable to arrange "alternative" shipping for
  31. our Christmas 1992 donations in time for the holidays.  Instead, we sent our
  32. "transportation funds" to the community to purchase food for their Christmas
  33. dinner, AND ARE NOW LEFT WITH 3 TONS OF DONATED GOODS WAITING TO BE SHIPPED.

  35.     We have found an opportunity for shipping the goods to Wounded Knee,
  36. and for a flat fee of $1650 all of the donated clothes and food will be sent
  37. to the community via an empty tractor trailer returning to South Dakota.  All
  38. goods will be distributed by Circle of Children, a local organization that
  39. promotes individual sponsorship of the children of the Pine Ridge Reservation,
  40. to Wounded Knee and other Lakota communities where children are sponsored.

  42.     The communities need the food and clothing NOW! The truck is scheduled
  43. to leave WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 27th.

  46.     How can you help?
  47.  
  48.     We need donations of cash (to cover shipment), food, winter clothing
  49. and blankets (in that order of priority.)  Please limit food donations to 
  50. healthy, high-protein foods - no starches.  Dried beans, peas and fruit are
  51. ideal.
  52.  
  53.     Donations of food and clothing are being accepted through TUESDAY,
  54. JANUARY 26th at the University of Mass., Lowell's Coburn Hall (on SOUTH
  55. Campus) Room 107.  
  56.  
  57.     Cash donations to help cover the cost of shipping will be accepted 
  58. through mid-February.
