  27.     UNPO Assembly Opens with Strong International Interest
  28.  
  29. Over sixty delegations are attending the Unrepresented Nations
  30. and Peoples Organization's  (UNPO) 3rd General Assembly -
  31. almost twice last year's number. Increased interest has also
  32. come from national governments, international organisations
  33. and NGOs, all represented by a growing body of observers.  
  34.  
  35. During the five day Assembly current members vote on the
  36. admission of new members, hear reports of members' problems
  37. and pass resolutions on future UNPO actions. 
  38.  
  39. Leading figures from indigenous and unrepresented peoples from
  40. around the world will attend. Some of the expected leaders are
  41. President Dudaev of Chechen, President Ibrahim Rugova of
  42. Kosova, Dr Costa of East Timor and Mr R Mariqueo representing
  43. the Mapuche from Argentina.

  45. This year's Assembly also includes a special, two day session
  46. on the right to self determination in relation to human rights
  47. and environmental protection. A number of guest speakers,
  48. including H.S.H Prince Hans-Adam II of Liechtenstein, Mr D
  49. Omar, ANC executive committee member and Mrs M Maguire chair-
  50. person of "The Peace People" from Belfast will speak.

  52. The UNPO was founded in February 1991 and has become know as
  53. the "alternative U.N.". Today its members represent over 100
  54. million people. UNPO acts as a forum for nations and peoples
  55. that are inadequately represented in international organizations 
  56. such as the United Nations. The UNPO supports its members
  57. in their struggle for cultural autonomy, self determination or
  58. independence - depending on their specific aims.

  60. Opening ceremony begins at 9.30am on Tuesday, January 19 at
  61. the Provinciehuis, Koninginnekade 1, The Hague, The Netherlands.
