- A co-worker of mine placed a book on my desk this morning entitled "Curious
- Myths of the Middle Ages" by S. Baring-Gould (Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1867)
- with the story "The Seven Sleepers of Ephesus" marked for me. At the
- end of that story is also an encapsulation of some other sleeper myths.
- To be a name dropper, there are tales about William Tell and Frederic Barbarosa
- in there as well.
-
- Here's the highlights of the Seven Sleepers: Seven Christians persecuted for
- refusing to worship idols take refuge in a cave and are sealed in by that
- meanie, Emperor Decius. They sleep for 375 years and awaken just as a heresy
- refuting the resurrection of the dead arises in the city of Ephesus. (How
- convenient) After some confusion, their identity is discovered, upon which
- they look skyward, die, and are canonized.
