  17. A co-worker of mine placed a book on my desk this morning entitled "Curious 
  18. Myths of the Middle Ages" by S. Baring-Gould (Boston:  Roberts Brothers, 1867)
  19. with the story "The Seven Sleepers of Ephesus" marked for me.  At the 
  20. end of that story is also an encapsulation of some other sleeper myths.  
  21. To be a name dropper, there are tales about William Tell and Frederic Barbarosa
  22. in there as well.

  24. Here's the highlights of the Seven Sleepers:  Seven Christians persecuted for
  25. refusing to worship idols take refuge in a cave and are sealed in by that 
  26. meanie, Emperor Decius.  They sleep for 375 years and awaken just as a heresy
  27. refuting the resurrection of the dead arises in the city of Ephesus.  (How 
  28. convenient)  After some confusion, their identity is discovered, upon which 
  29. they look skyward, die, and are canonized.
