  12. why go to the alt.soc group when you have your very own sociologist RIGHT HERE.
  13. the type of survey that Mr. Hudel is conducting is called a Non-probablilty
  14. Sampling of the Purposive type... in other words...

  16. Mr. Hudel is conducting a survey in which the respondents (you and me) are NOT
  17. chosen at random so that he can FOCUS on a particular group of individuals.
  18. Since the element of randomness is removed, one cannot compute a chance of any
  19. given unit (you or me) being selected, and thus Mr. Hudel cannot generate an
  20. error value for his survey....
  21. this however, is ok... because that is the nature of the survey... no error
  22. calculation is necessary/warranted/or possible....
  23. Mr. Hudel will gain insight into the nature of Virtual Addiction (sic) and how
  24. people recognize and deal with it...
  25. he will not however, be able to determine the prevailence of the addiction, or
  26. be able to make broad, sweeping statements about the addiction in the general
  27. population... Non-probability sampling is an inquisitive form of sampling,
  28. very useful in getting the facts or beliefs of groups and behaviors... it is
  29. perfectly legitimate....  you see it every day on the news...
  30. polling people at random (not really random, but that is another argument) on
  31. the street at lunchtime [called accidental sampling], quota sampling, getting
  32. a group of experts in a field to talk on the Today Show, are all accepted
  33. examples of Non-Prob. sampling.... 
  34. SO GO AHEAD... fill out the survey, i will.... but remember, a survey is only
  35. as good as it's instrument... (the questinaire itself)  and I am not going to
  36. make ANY comments on this particular instrument... [sadistic grin]... i will
  37. let Mr. Hudel find out for himself if it surveys what he wants it to....
  38. besides... I would normally get a few hundred dollars +++ dollars for this type
  39. of consultation.... GRIN
