- why go to the alt.soc group when you have your very own sociologist RIGHT HERE.
- the type of survey that Mr. Hudel is conducting is called a Non-probablilty
- Sampling of the Purposive type... in other words...
-
- Mr. Hudel is conducting a survey in which the respondents (you and me) are NOT
- chosen at random so that he can FOCUS on a particular group of individuals.
- Since the element of randomness is removed, one cannot compute a chance of any
- given unit (you or me) being selected, and thus Mr. Hudel cannot generate an
- error value for his survey....
- this however, is ok... because that is the nature of the survey... no error
- calculation is necessary/warranted/or possible....
- Mr. Hudel will gain insight into the nature of Virtual Addiction (sic) and how
- people recognize and deal with it...
- he will not however, be able to determine the prevailence of the addiction, or
- be able to make broad, sweeping statements about the addiction in the general
- population... Non-probability sampling is an inquisitive form of sampling,
- very useful in getting the facts or beliefs of groups and behaviors... it is
- perfectly legitimate.... you see it every day on the news...
- polling people at random (not really random, but that is another argument) on
- the street at lunchtime [called accidental sampling], quota sampling, getting
- a group of experts in a field to talk on the Today Show, are all accepted
- examples of Non-Prob. sampling....
- SO GO AHEAD... fill out the survey, i will.... but remember, a survey is only
- as good as it's instrument... (the questinaire itself) and I am not going to
- make ANY comments on this particular instrument... [sadistic grin]... i will
- let Mr. Hudel find out for himself if it surveys what he wants it to....
- besides... I would normally get a few hundred dollars +++ dollars for this type
- of consultation.... GRIN

- ps- if you really would like input on the instrument, Mr. Hudel... i would be
- glad to help... no charge... i am not THAT mercenary... grin
