  10. -> In May, 1979 a man named Ray Erler was killed in a car accident near
  11. -> British Columbia, Canada.  His wife and he were separated at the time
  12. -> wife had custody of their two daughters, and Mr. Erler had visiting r
  13. -> Unfortunately, they were visiting Mr. Erler at the time of his death.
  14. -> his wife tried to retrieve her children, Mr. Erler's brother abducted
  15. -> children and took them across the border into Washington State, leavi
  16. -> with their aunt living on Mercer Island near Seattle.  Her name was I
  17. -> a spinster sister of Mr. Erler.  She refused to return the children t
  18. -> mother, and filed for custody of the children in Washington State.  A
  19. -> there awarded her custody after the childrens' mother was unable to r
  20. -> money needed for a court battle.  It ended up that the mother had a l
  21. -> order for custody in Canada, but the aunt had a legal court order for
  22. -> in the United States, and since the children were in the US, the moth
  23. -> of options and lost her daughters.  This was in the days prior to the
  24. -> Convention, so she had no recourse.
  25. ->     Right after Christmas, 1981, the mother received a letter from he
  26. -> daughters thanking her for the Christmas presents she had sent.  The
  27. -> wrote letters trying to keep in touch with her daughters, but they we
  28. -> unanswered until suddenly in 1986, when she received a picture of eac
  29. -> with a very brief note from each in the mail.  She wrote letters back
  30. -> were returned by the Post Office.  She never heard from her daughters
  31. ->     The mother travelled to the United States to try to establish con
  32. -> her daughters in 1986, but the P.O. where she had been sending her le
  33. -> Mount Vernon, Washington said that the Erlers had not picked up their
  34. -> three months.  Discouraged, the mother returned to Canada and has bee
  35. -> to find any trace of the daughters she has not seen since 1981 during
  36. -> battle.
  37. ->     This lady realizes that her daughters have a life and that they m
  38. -> happy where they are.  She does not want to try to take them away bac
  39. -> Canada, upset them, or cause them any pain, but she is heart broken a
  40. -> desperately to find out where they are so that she knows they are sti
  41. -> They are grown up now, and it is important that they understand that
  42. -> been fighting for the last 12 years.  She fought battles all the way
  43. -> Prime Minister's office to get her daughters returned to her, but wit
  44. -> money for lawyers in the US, she was beaten before she started.  She
  45. -> not abandon them, she loves them, and needs desperately for them to c
  46. -> her....
