  12.     The Total Perspective Vortex appears in "The Restaurant at the End of the
  13. Universe" by Douglas Adams.  For more info, read on, or if you don't want to
  14. spoil the book, skip this message.

  19.                              It was created by a philosopher/inventer whose
  20. wife, tired of all his useless inventions, told him "Why don't you get some
  21. perspective."  This gave him the idea, to construct a model of the total univer
  22. se and your position in it from the interconnectedness of all things, via a
  23. piece of fairy cake.  Once plugged in, you see the entirety of the universe,
  24. and a small dot with an arrow pointing at it saying, "You are here."  The inven
  25. tor did not realize the psychological impact it would have until he tested it
  26. on his wife.  He was not nearly as upset with the results as one might expect.
  27.      The Vortex was banished to Frogstar world B, a planet desolate since the
  28. collapse of its shoe-based economy.  Only the most heinous criminals were
  29. subjected to its forces.
  30.       Meanwhile, Zaphod Beeblebrox, President of the Galaxy, was being hunted
  31. by Frogstar fighters after stealing the experimental ship "Heart of Gold".  He
  32. escaped into the "holodeck" room of a friend, but when he exited, he was
  33. promptly captured by the Frogstar fighters before he even had time to scrounge
  34. up a good lunch.                            After he was placed in the vortex,
  35. the sentinel watched, expecting him to fall out face first like all of the
  36. other criminals.   Finally, Zaphod stepped out, grinned, and ravenously ate the
  37.  small piece of fairy cake lying in the machine.

  39. The Vortex had shown him the vastness of the universe, and his place in all of
  40. it.  It had told him, quite simply, that he was the most important thing in it.

  43. It was a bloody shame that when he met his holodeck friend, that he learned
  44. the vortex was a part of the fake reality of the holodeck, and since the
  45. holodeck was made to hide Zaphod, naturally he was the most important thing
  46. in it.  Unfortunately, the same did not hold true for actual reality.
