- The substantial obstacles that face academic writers of hypertext are a
- great nuisance-- Greg Crane predicted this at the first hypertext
- conference back in 1987, and it has not yet been overcome.
-
- One alternative, of course, is to find a publisher specializing in
- hypertext. Eastgate Systems, Inc., my employer, publishes hypertext
- fiction and non-fiction; we'd be interested in your project.
-
- Several university presses have expressed at least a tenative willingness
- to publish hypertexts. Yale University Press publishes the Perseus
- Project-- a very important hypertext on ancient Greek literature and art.
- Oxford publishes some electronic editions of classic works. Rutgers has
- something in the works. Other university presses are taking a serious look at
- the matter.
-
- Other trade publishers are sometimes willing to publish software adjuncts
- to conventional books, and might even consider a pure hypertext. Lawrence
- Erlbaum Associates distributes Jay Bolter's WRITING SPACE hypertext at
- cost to people who read the paper version of Writing Space. Random House,
- Apple, and Voyager have a 3-way deal to create electronic editions of
- The Modern Library, and many other publishers are looking closely at the
- project.
