- You need a different viewpoint (since I am an advocate of clean air). You
- are not "getting around" the smog laws, you are operating a high performance
- (whether it is power or economy) vehicle that is very clean, and well within
- any emission limits. It is an opportunity to prove "Yes you can", to the
- "It can't be done" crowd. The advantage of the exemption is that it removes
- the hassles from your experimentation. It should not be used as a ticket to
- pollute. Don't abuse the exemption, or it will be taken away from us.

- [My attitude is "if I can be clean with no loss of power, why not?"
- Converting to alternative fuel is to an extent "getting around" the smog
- law to the extent that the law goes far beyond just controlling emissions,
- to dictating what equipment can be installed (OEM or EO'd). I'd
- have little to complain about if the law let us make modifications
- as we pleased and then have the results certified. BTW, there's a lot
- of motion around EPA right now trying to figure out what to do about
- aldehyde emissions (what makes your eyes burn around methanol burning
- vehicles). My literature has conflicting claims regarding the efficacy
- of catalytic converters on aldehyde. Some say it works, some say it
- doesn't and others (probably correctly) say it sorta works if the
- temperature is high enough. High enough exhaust temperature is the
- problem. Even if this is worked out, I don't know many people
- who can live with 6-10 mpg on the stuff. Ignoring the cost and
- taxes based on gallons for a moment, most cars' tanks just won't hold
- enough fuel to be useful. JGD]
