- First off let me thank those of you out there who knew about times when
- the Semi victor did not repeat in Finals. However, noting that the last
- instance of this was 1983, it's been a long time (and some may say never in the
- "modern era" of drum corps) since anyone has taken Finals after not winning
- Semis.
-
- Anyhow, here's an idea that's been kicked around more seriously than one
- might think, and by more important people than one might think.
-
- What if Finals was changed to similar format like that of DCM finals?
- Meaning, Finals night saw the top 6 (instead of 12) open class corps, and say
- the top 4 from Division II and III. Here's the concept...
-
- With the financial problems of fielding top open class corps, some people
- are wondering about the feasibility of changing the formats. So, with the
- above mentioned scenario, a corps that's consistently placing in the lower part
- of top 17, let's use Spirit as an example, might think about dropping to Div
- II, where they can compete on a much better level.
-
- Of course, the rules stay the same, Div II is 90 members or less, and Div
- III 60 members or less (I believe that's the rule). In the case of a Spirit,
- remember this is TOTALLY hypothetical, Spirit is in no way thinking of this.
- Again in Spirit's case, they can travel with less equipment, maybe even one
- less bus, and save on a fair amount of money in the process. For what ends
- though? Why, they might still get to play Saturday night, and above all enjoy
- a better level of competition.
-
- The ramifications of this can be astounding, Div II, and III could get
- their respective dues, and the levels of excellence in each category couldn't
- help but be increased. Yes, this has problems for many of the existing smaller
- corps, but this could lead to mergers of units that would produce bigger more
- financially sound corps. And all sorts of other things like that.
-
- OF course the TV broadcast would most likely stay the same (probably with
- Curt Gowdy commentating on his death band "Love that Crocodile" IT'S A SHARK<
- CURT!) But then again things could easily change. Anyone familar with the
- Indiana State Band Champs. would probably favor Class B bands over Class A,
- for various reasons.
-
- With all this talk about drum corps being dead, and let's add reeds and
- such, maybe a shakeup like this could cure that for a few decades. Then again
- the Cubbies sued over the baseball realignment issue, what would George Hopkins
- do about this?
-
- I imagine this is too long, but hey you fans out there, what do you think?
