  12. I recall reading in one of my intro psych source books that dreams take
  13. place in real time.  They did an experiment in which people were allowed to
  14. enter REM for 5 or 10 minutes, and when awakened they told stories of
  15. corresponding lengths.  The book goes on to say that dreams seem longer
  16. because there are little cuts and scene shifts as in the movies that let us
  17. know that time has passed.  Somehow I was never satisfied by that
  18. explanation.
