- I doubt that this is likely, or even desirable.
-
- Votes are not taken in alt. The only things that get done are based
- on self-motivation, and occasionally popular consensus. Usenet has a
- fairly straightforward voting system which makes it possible to move
- and remove old newsgroups, and one that's generally accepted by the
- reading public. Hence, when tale sends out a rmgroup message, people
- understand there's a good reason for it, and expect it.
-
- The situation is not the same with alt. Groups get moved because
- someone suggested it and no one objects. On what basis would we
- designate a "central authority" to have the final say-so in what goes
- on? Having an authority without organization, here, would mean a
- dictatorship. On what basis could tale be expected to make his
- decisions regarding what gets newgrouped or rmgrouped and expect to be
- consistent?

-
- Find groups that are unused on your system or those which seem to
- fulfill no purpose (any .foo.foo.foo group is grounds for immediate
- deletion here, for example). Announce that you're planning to remove
- these newsgroups and wait for the hue and cry. If you get no
- objections, hack away.
-
- 6500 lines? We get a pretty complete feed of alt, bit, and the Big
- Seven, not to mention gnu, bionet, ne, and a few other hierarchies.
- Our active file is 1800 lines long.
