- History does have a funny way of changing in our memories sometimes in
- some ways. One thing that has changed in color guard (in my opinion) is
- the lack of emphasis on accuracy. There was a time when if, no matter how
- easy or difficult a drill or equipment work was, you did not get alot of
- credit unless it was done right (ie: accurately, equipment caught instead
- of dropped, etc.). Now it seems that it doesn't really matter how well
- you do something as long as it's difficult. The reason I left color guard
- in 1985 was exactly for this reason. I couldn't stand the lack of quality
- and did not want to be a part of it anymore. I went to my first show
- since 1985 just a couple of weeks ago and found that nothing has changed.
- I'm talking about all the classes, not just World Class. Obviously those
- guards are on a different level than everyone else.
-
- My last year marching, 1983, my color guard (and everyone else in the
- Boston area) lost every contest to a certain color guard that dropped 20 -
- 30 pieces of equipment EVERY show. They were attempting more than the
- rest of us and probably did deserve to win but not by 10 points every
- show. This is when I first noticed that lack of accuracy was not only
- accepted but encouraged by the judges. I feel that they encouraged it
- simply by giving great scores for attempting something difficult even if
- it was done totally wrong. I feel that BOTH difficulty and accuracy are
- important. What do you think?
-
- On another note, the girl that was cut after marching in two shows should
- be upset. I'd really love to know what guard we're talking about. I find
- what they did to her totally disgusting. In my guard everyone
- participated regardless of their ability. I hope she finds a new guard
- for next year.
-
- Robert Dugan, who is your guard? Is your guard going to be at the WGI
- Regional this weekend in Salem, MA? Right now I am not planning on going
- but I may change my mind. I did not get tickets so that means if I go I
- will have to buy them when I get there and will probably get bad seats.
- Let us know what happens though!
