- I am not a list member, but I do occasionally retrieve the CDROM-L log
- just to keep up with the discussion. Questions and observations about
- the TEXEL 3024/5024 CDROM units are becoming more frequent, so I thought
- I'd add my two cents worth.
-
- First I opted for TEXEL 3024 over the NEC equivalent for 2 reasons.
- The 3024 was about $85.00 cheaper and it offered the faster seek time
- of the two. The 3024 comes with a 1 yr warranty, 2 if you use a major
- credit card.
-
- I am running a Gateway 386 DX33 ,DOS 5.0 & Windows 3.1. The TEXEL is
- connected to a Pro-Audio Spectrum 16 SCSI controller. The drive was
- ordered bare ( unit, 1 caddy & scsi cable ), so that I could order the
- correct drivers from Media-Vision. All together $415.00 for the drive
- and $39.00 to Media_Vision for the software and the audio cable.
-
- The unit appears to be well built. I go into the column in support of a
- mechanical eject. Loading a CD requires opening the door and pushing
- the caddy completely inside. This is not necessarily a two-handed job.
- Physical installation required no more than 15 minutes. The diskette
- from Media-Vision contains an 'install' program that will add the
- driver and MCSDEX to your config.sys and autoexec.bat. It also creates
- a subdirectory 'TSCSI' and copies several files. The software install
- added about 5 minutes to the overall installation. Rebooted the system
- and everything worked like a Walt Disney movie.
-
- For Windows, I had to install the driver for CD from the original
- disks. Again, the process was quite painless and after restarting
- Windows the unit functioned properly.
-
- The drive came single-session Photo CD capable, but has an upgrade
- to multi-session for $19.95. The Audio is good, both through the front
- mini-jack and through the PAS16. The response when accessing the drive
- is more than satisfactory. The manual accompanying the TEXEL does an
- acceptable job of describing the unit and the installation process.
- On the other hand, the manual from Media-Vision is basically
- worthless. All in all, I am very pleased with the ease of installation
- and the performance.
-
- The Media-Vision diskette contains 2 undocumented files, SCSITEST.EXE
- and CHKCD.EXE. The SCSITEST does what the name implies, checks for
- the presence of SCSI adapters/devices and reports results. The CHKCD
- is for those that tire of seeing their system up and running. It is
- extremely effective for hanging up the PC.
-
- There was one surprise. The 3024 has only one SCSI port. It will
- always have to be on the end of the SCSI chain. I must admit, I never
- thought about this possibility prior to being faced with it. The
- external unit 5024 does have 2 ports. Oh well, live and learn.
-
- I would like to know what CHKCD is supposed to do, if someone has the
- info. Hope this helps someone in the decision process.
