  10. Magda puts a dollar bill down on the bar and, after thinking
  11. for a moment, requests a cherry brandy.  Slowly she walks to the
  12. chalkline and stands staring into the fire for a moment.
  13.  
  14. "I just received some very bad news from a friend of mine."
  15.  
  16. She pauses, looks into her glass, and continues on.  "I'm kind
  17. of out of touch--in exile--with my "adopted" family so news
  18. sometimes doesn't get to me in a timely manner.  This has been
  19. a rotten month for the family, but I just got hit with it all
  20. at once.
  21.  
  22. "On Jan 2nd or 3rd, the home of the mother of two of my friends
  23. was broken into during the night.  She was murdered in her bed.
  24. If there is anything to be grateful for, in all of this, it would
  25. be that there was a single blow and she died instantly.  She will
  26. be missed.

  28. "On Jan 11th, another family member died from lung cancer.  We
  29. said goodbye to his wife a year ago when she went west from the
  30. same thing.  The hard part about this one was the family forgot
  31. to tell me he was in the hospital, had one lung removed, and--
  32. thundering mud--they even forgot to tell me that he was SICK!
  33. Rev. Ted will be sorely missed.  The August camping trips won't
  34. seem right without him.

  36. "There are other tragedies and heart-breaks I'm dealing with now,
  37. but they weren't such a shock to me.  Anyway, this toast is for
  38. all of them.  Friends, to the survivors!  To those who must stay
  39. behind when friends and family ride westward, to those who are
  40. left behind when others leave them, to those who are taken from
  41. those they love against their will."

  43. And Magda-Wolf tosses back most of the brandy and hurls the empty
  44. glass into the fireplace where the left-over alcohol causes a
  45. brilliant flash.
