- Hello Richard,

-
- As far as I know BITNET cannot be used for commercial purposes.
-
- Here's some history:
-
- BITNET began in 1981 as a small network of IBM computers based at the
- City University of New York (CUNY). Today BITNET connects over 1,300
- sites and 2,400 computers in 38 countries. It is made up of three
- separate networks connecting academic and research organizations.
- BITNET itself consists of BITNET (US and Mexico), NetNorth (Canada),
- and EARN (European Academic Research Network). BITNET is run by EDUCOM
- in Washington, DC, USA, and is part of CREN. BITNET members must be
- members of CREN.
-
- Retrieved this information from "!%@:: A Directory of Electronic Mail Addressing
- and Networks" by Donnalyn Frey and Rick Adams, published in 1990. So this
- information might be just a bit out of date.
- Well, maybe the folks at BITNET, reading this newsgroup, will provide some up-
- to-date information?
-
- Anyway, you could try to freq (=file request; Fidonet terminology) some text
- files from NETSERV@bitnic.educom.edu. Try a "GET BITNET USERHELP" and a "HELP"
- command. That should give you a start.
-
- There are also a lot of BITNET listservers, serving all kinds of mailing lists.
- If you want to, I can mail you a list. Just let me know.
-
- BTW, many LISTSERVER mailing lists are redistributed in Net News (all the bit.*
- newsgroups).
-
- Bye for now,
- Peter.
