- : This type of software is (IMHO) more suitable to a door than to
- : actual BBS software. A BBS needs to be flexible enough to allow for
- : such specific uses, yet it needs to be standard enough to be useful
- : to many types of SYSOPs and users. What you are asking for should be
- : an "add-on" in my opinion.

- Magpie BBS (Unix and DOS) have both offered full text search capability
- for several years and it's without a doubt one of the most popular features
- with users. One can compose multi-criteria, boolean searches like:
-
- "show me all messages containing the string 'rap' but not the
- string 'sucks' that were written after 11/15/92"
-
- The search could be further reduced by specifying author name(s),
- recipient name(s) and whether or not the message contains an attached
- file. It can then be further reduced to messages existing in the current
- thread only.
-
- I can't imagine running any kind of informational BBS without such a
- built-in search engine.
